Health and lifestyle Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be difficult in prison. Many inmates arrive in poor health and with unhealthy habits. This diminished quality of life is exacerbated among those with substance abuse and addiction problems. In order to give prisoners the opportunity for a good quality of life after incarceration, it is important to facilitate education and better follow-up on the path to better health. In the PriSUD cohort, NorMA , prisoners' overall quality of life is measured by validated instruments in which prisoners have answered questions about health habits prior to and during imprisonment. Using registry data, we are investigating a connection between these habits and eventual illness and death. Publications on this topic Havnes, Ingrid Amalia, Bukten, Anne, Rognli, Eline Borger, and Muller, Ashley Elizabeth. Alcohol, drugs and treatment About half of all inmates have a substance abuse disorder upon entry to prison. After release, the risk of overdose death and relapse into substance abuse is very high. Because of this, it is important to detect substance abuse disorders upon arrival at the prison and offer adequate treatment for substance abuse disorders during imprisonment. This will lead to better health for people with substance abuse disorders in prison. The PriSUD project aims to investigate the prevalence of substance abuse disorders among inmates in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish prisons. We also examine the availability of adequate drug treatment in prison, as well as the outcome of such treatment after release in a Nordic context. Together with a number of partners, we work with several sub-projects focusing on screening, alcohol and drug use before and during imprisonment as well as various outcomes after imprisonment. Publications on the topic Andersen, Synøve N., Jordan M. The PriSUD project PriSUD is the main name of a large research project that has been developed over a long period of time at the Center for Drug and Addiction Research at the University of Oslo (UiO). The project has constantly worked towards the goal of mapping, evaluating and examining outcomes related to substance abuse disorders and their treatment in prison. Over time, the project has increased in scope and today has two main parts: PriSUD-Norway and PriSUD-Norden. In addition, the project has an arm in the research project PRISONHEALTH - a project run by Thomas Ugelvik at the Department of Criminology and Forensic Sociology at UiO. Subprojects PriSUD-Norway: Better health for people with substance abuse disorders in prison PriSUD-Norden: Treatment of substance abuse disorders in the prison population - an opportunity for better public health PriSUD-Norge's ambition is to improve treatment for people with substance abuse disorders in Norway. The project is based on questionnaire data collected among persons imprisoned in Norwegian prisons, as well as data from Norwegian national and administrative registers. PriSUD-Norden's ambition is to evaluate the treatment of substance abuse disorders among people with prison experience in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The project has three parts; a large register study, a qualitative study and a study that looks at the possibility of using risk calculation tools. Cohorts The PriSUD project mainly uses two data sources; two cohorts that will be used to illuminate different aspects of the project. These cohorts have been named The Norwegian Prison Release Study (nPRIS) and The Norwegian Offender Mental Health and Addiction Study (NorMA). All data used in the PriSUD project has been de-identified. In addition, all results will be anonymized , ie no persons will be able to be identified based on material published from the study. The data in the study are stored through the Services for Sensitive Data ( TSD ). The Norwegian Offender Mental Health and Addiction Study (NorMA ) The NorMA cohort is based on questionnaire data collected among 1499 inmates in Norwegian prisons. Data were collected in a total of 57 prison units in the period 2013-2014, and included prisons with high and low security levels, as well as transitional housing. The Norwegian Prison Release Study (nPRIS ) nPRIS is a cohort based on administrative data from all Norwegian prisons. The cohort has been updated several times, and currently contains information on all sentences from and including 01.01.2000 to and including 31.12.2019. Collaborative projects PRISONHEALTH : Prisoner health in healthy prisons PRISONHEALTH's ambition is to find out whether the welfare state's health services in practice reach prison inmates who need them. The project is based on a qualitative and a quantitative part, where the PriSUD group is involved in the quantitative part. The Mortality After Release from Incarceration Consortium ( MARIC ) study The MARIC study is a very ambitious and unique study that includes longitudinal data from 28 large studies in 13 countries, of which the PriSUD project is a part. The aim of the study is to investigate deaths after release from prison.
